i am looking to solder a circuit board, was just wondering which would be better a ” Hot Air Soldering ” or a ” Soldering Iron Station “?

I was just wondering, i wanna mod my xbox controller but i dont wanna pay for like a $70 soldering station,

can you get a soldering iron that doesent need a station?

I am doing a course in Electronic Engineering ( im living in sco btw =D ) and i wanna mod my xbox controller because i feel i could do with a little more than a challenge than stripboard work, anyways if anyone knows the answer would help alot thanks =D
